What it is and how it works
Would you like to be able to use the POWER OF YOUR MIND to make positive changes in your life? The use of hypnosis can do just that. However, hypnosis is not a replacement for medical treatment, but can enhance the outcome of other therapies.
There is solid evidence that hypnosis can reduce pain and anxiety for minimally invasive procedures such as dentistry, burn therapy, or chronic pain. It also works well for disorders that are worsened by stress such as irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, back pain and migraine headaches. Hypnosis is used very successfully for weight loss and smoking cessation.
Hypnosis is plagued with misconceptions and misunderstanding. Before considering what hypnosis is, perhaps it would be appropriate to establish what it is not. Hypnosis is not sleep! In fact, in MOST cases the subject is fully aware of communication and is able to respond on request either verbally or by signal. Nor is unconsciousness involved. A subject asked to make a specific movement will comply with the request unless it is objectionable, in which case there will be a refusal. There is no surrender of mind or control. You will not say or do anything contrary to your principles. A person who does not want to be hypnotized cannot be hypnotized or be induced to do or say anything which violates personal standards of behavior or integrity. There is neither magic nor voodoo involved.
The definition of hypnosis is “a state of awareness that is characterized by relaxation and a higher responsiveness to suggestion.” This is a process in which the subject (you) chooses to see (mentally) only that which is relevant to his/her task (problem), blocking out everything else. Hypnosis involves guided concentration. Hypnosis, properly administered, can provide a lifetime of benefit.
Who can be hypnotized? Anyone that is willing to utilize the hypnotherapist as intended; as a guide, a coach, a teacher and a facilitator. With that relationship anyone with the desire to make positive changes in their lives can be hypnotized.
